Why use LegalValidate for csv to excel (xlsx)
The separator is detected, not guessed
Commas, semicolons and tabs are worked out from the file — the reason a CSV normally lands in one column.
A real workbook
Column widths and types are set, so it opens as a spreadsheet rather than as a text import wizard.
Unicode intact
Cyrillic and accented text survive the round trip.
No Excel needed
Runs in the browser session, no software installed.
When you need this
- An export from another system arrives as a semicolon CSV and Excel mangles it.
- A contract annex has to be sent as a proper workbook.
- Data has to be shared with someone who will not use a text editor.
- You want to sort and total exported data.
What this tool will not do
- One CSV becomes one sheet — this does not combine several files into one workbook.
- Formulas cannot be created from text; values arrive as values.
- Very large CSVs are limited by the 10 MB upload cap.
CSV to Excel (XLSX) — questions
My CSV uses semicolons. Will that work? +
Yes. The delimiter is sniffed from the file, which is exactly the case Excel gets wrong when you double-click a European CSV.
Is the encoding handled? +
Yes — Unicode text is preserved rather than being reinterpreted in a system codepage.
Can I convert back? +
Excel to CSV does the reverse, with a BOM so Excel reopens it correctly.
Need to do more than one thing to this document?
Open it in the document workspace instead: upload once, then reorder, rotate, delete, merge and compress without sending the file again.
